Dated: 21MAR2010. @Salang Indah.
A swift dive trip that was not supposed to have happenned(Kevin, sorry to miss your big day!). Accepting a call from Bill for a quick hop in and hop out trip to tioman island. Being a way from Tioman since 2007, it was a tioman rediscovery.
The weather didn't offer much help from beginning to the end. RF was steadily drived under influenced of redbull(yeah!) and started at 5am from KL, Kuala Pilah, Rombin, Telok Gemok then arrived slightly past 9am at Mersing port. The road was smoothier than 3 year ago, it is straight forward. The jetty looked refurbished. Yet the untiming ferry services have not better as far as I last visted. Any regular passengers at this route would not have argued on that and seem to accept the fact of an hour delay was part of the journey. I think. Bluewater ferry services have upgraded its shipyards. It does equiped with the lookalike economy class flight-seats. A thumb plus! The whole 2hours course was as cosy as sitting in the plane. "Berjaya Tekek", "ABC"... finally "Salang"(the last northen point) shouted by the ferry attendant with fixed broadcasting speakers overhead. We were there before and it is still attractive and better than the rest strecthes kampong on this island. Salang is made up of a few restorants and homestays. Importantly, dive shops were a few footsteps away. I took a dip into the sea near Pulau Benas where giant marvels sit bottom creating a cradle-like in raising juveniles coral fishes. Baby sea fans spread out the seascape. Blue dots stingrays are rampant and No sighting of any giant groupers though.
The local people is uncanningly friendly. It worth to come back!
Lodging: RM120/room (enough to accomodate 6pax+!)
Food: RM10/meal(Ouch! Pricy if compare to PJ)

Tioman, is a legacy of top 10 best islands in the world and it is now losing its title. The impact of the big marine and airport projects have taken away its charm of the natural beauty along the coast lines(the main disasterious zone is Tekek). The only travel tip I have is to go for northern jetty namely Salang. Food and lodging are finger tips away.
Diving is the only thing I can hope for while the beach seems uninteresting at all. Luckily the water is not as bad as it look on the beaches. Other than the shipwrecks that left nothing to expect of, dive sites eg. Malang have lots of vigrant color soft corals and adventurous. RF and I were swirling through rocky bottom on seabed. It was memorial.
How to get there? A)From KL heads on North-South highway exits at Seremban. Passing Kuala Pilah, Jempol, Bandar Tun Razak, Kuala Rombin and stop at Tanjung Gemuk Jetty. It is roughly a 4hrs journey. B) From Singapore to Mersing Jetty. 2hr on air-con ferry shall take you to Tioman. Make sure you meet the last boat ride at 2:30pm.
